Empire Day

Empire Day was celebrated on 24 May.

It was customary for the children to line up in the playground, raise the Union Flag, salute it and then sing Land of Hope and Glory and God Save the King.

Walking in crocodile to the Church, they would take trays of lilac that would then be laid around the War Memorial.

Air Raid Precautions

As early as May 1939 the Education Authority were requesting details of:
(i) "suitable sites for trenches in case of air raids
(ii) details of evacuation scheme for London and the reception of children in East Suffolk"

A Parish Meeting held on 25th July 1941 records that the shelter was located in the school ditch.
