A brief history ........................ ..

Earl Soham Tennis Club came into being in April 1979. A committee was formed and the Chairman took on the responsibility of providing a tennis court. This was to be sited on a designated area of land owned by The Town Trust. A planning application had been overcome and a lease and grants applied for. Fund raising commenced and various functions were undertaken. Many of the village locals were involved in this procedure. The grass court was formed and the necessary netting surround was erected. A stipulation by the Planners was that the surrounding hedge be Maple adjacent to the roadside and the east the ditch had been cleared and the area generally tidied. The first President was elected and thirteen Vice Presidents agreed to act In this capacity. At least one hundred well wishers gathered round to witness the official opening of the court by Mrs Christine Janes (formerly Truman) in warm spring weather on Friday evening 18 April 1980. Adult membership was agreed at £3, non-playing membership £2 and a junior membership of £1. The maintenance of the grass court and the surrounding hedges was undertaken by members of the club. The club continued to prosper with various fund raising events, Annual dinners and club tournaments. Membership was steady and friendly mixed and ladies matches were held against local tennis clubs. Even though the grass court was loved by many the decision was made in 2001 to have a hard all-weather court laid. Elliott Tennis Services was the contractor employed and the result an amazing court, perfect level and a most attractive and kind to the eye colouring.
